A native New Yorker, Deirdre Helen Swords began her professional artistic journey in Brooklyn in the late 90s. She currently lives and works in Harlem.

Artist’s Statement:

Making form is a very spiritual experience. There is a sense of simultaneously losing oneself, finding oneself, and touching the universal. Sometimes, with something like luck, the mystery and magic of both material and process (control and lack of control) fuel the presence of an important truth.

As a person of European descent I was raised in the traditions of, and educated in the arts of, European cultures. However for the past 20 years it is mostly Asian and African culture that have inspired me. I am drawn to the roles art plays in traditional Asian and African cultures. They have had a tremendous impact upon my imagination - in both form and content.
